Oracle’s “Business Is Good and Getting Better”

On December 11, Oracle reported mixed second-quarter results for its fiscal 2024 that showed total revenue advancing 5% on a year-over-year basis (4% in constant currency), slightly lower than expectations, and non-GAAP earnings per share of $1.34 that came in slightly ahead of what the market was looking for. The company’s non-GAAP operating margin of 43% in the quarter helped to drive non-GAAP net income 14% higher than the same period a year ago (11% in constant currency). We’re not letting the slight miss on the top line sway us from our constructive stance on shares. Our fair value estimate stands at $108 per share, about in-line with where shares are currently trading. Dec 10, 2023
First Gene-Editing Therapy Coming to Market; Reiterating Our Positive Stance on Vertex Pharma

On December 8, 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it had approved Vertex Pharma’s and CRISPR Therapeutics’ novel gene-editing therapy (“Casgevy” – exa-cel) for sickle cell disease [SCD] in patients that are 12 years of age or older. This is the first such approval of its kind in U.S. history and will likely open the door for more gene-editing therapies for other rare diseases in the future. Estimates indicate that roughly 16,000 people will be eligible for the treatment at an estimated cost of around $2.2 million each, according to Reuters. The one-time market size of roughly $35.2 billion is a needle-mover, but the pace and timing of adoption of the therapy among the eligible population is difficult to estimate at this time. Note also that the therapy is of one-time application, meaning the therapy is a functional cure and will not be a source of recurring revenue from each patient. Public Storage Raises Core FFO Guidance for 2023
Image Source: Public Storage. Among the REIT sub-sectors, we continue to favor the self-storage space mostly because its traditional free cash flow dynamics are much more attractive. Self-storage REITs are generally recession-resistant, too, offer high operating margins, and generally lower maintenance capital requirements. Public Storage is our favorite self-storage REIT and yields ~5% at the time of this writing. Shares of PSA have soured with the broader equity REIT sell-off this year and have declined nearly 13% year-to-date in 2023. Though we expect a challenging market environment for equity REITs, we view Public Storage as the best long-term play in self-storage. Oct 25, 2023
Visa’s High Margin Business Reveals Consumer Spending Remains Resilient
Image: Visa has been a strong performer thus far in 2023. On October 24, Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio holding Visa reported excellent fourth-quarter results for its fiscal 2023. Net revenues advanced 11% on a year-over-year basis, while non-GAAP net income and non-GAAP earnings per share leapt 18% and 21% year-over-year, respectively, in the period. For the fiscal year, Visa generated an impressive 64.4% operating margin. Payments volume increased 9% and cross-border volume advanced 16%, showcasing that the consumer remains very healthy thanks in part to low unemployment rates, despite concerns over higher mortgage costs, student loan repayments, and general economic uncertainty as savings accrued during the COVID-19 pandemic wane. We continue to be big fans of Visa as our top payments-related idea. Jul 26, 2023

The Dividend Cushion Ratio: Unadjusted Is Less Subjective, Adjusted Is More Subjective

It says your Valuentum Adjusted Dividend Cushion ratio for EPD is 1.8 (a ratio that includes future expected proceeds from capital raising endeavors in the coming years), but several lines below it says the Unadjusted Dividend Cushion ratio, which is your regular normal ratio (a ratio that does not include future expected proceeds from capital raising endeavors in the coming years), is 0.22. Please explain the difference between the two ratios, and what is considered a good ratio for the Unadjusted Dividend Cushion ratio, what is an excellent score, what is neutral and what is poor? Also, how much relative importance should I give to each ratio? Also, further down in the section on Unadjusted Dividend Cushion, the chart of EPD has a large negative number in the blue bar, and your text says: "Generally speaking, the greater the 'blue bar' to the right is in the positive, the more durable a company's dividend, and the greater the 'blue bar' to the right is in the negative, the less durable a company's dividend." So that means that EPD's dividend isn't durable, yet your report earlier says that EPD's Dividend Safety rating is GOOD. Can you elaborate? Dec 21, 2022

Image: Digital Realty Trust has outperformed the broader REIT sector by quite the margin since the beginning of 2023. Real estate investors have had a difficult time the past year, with shares of the Vanguard Real Estate Index ETF falling roughly 6% versus a 22%+ return on the S&P 500, both measured on a price-only basis. Data center REIT Digital Realty, however, has bucked the trend of the broader real estate sector’s weakness advancing 20% over the same time period on a price only basis. Digital Realty’s fourth-quarter results and guidance for 2024, released February 15, weren’t great, but the company is much better positioned than other REITs, in our view. Shares yield ~3.6% at the time of this writing.
