Delta Air Lines Speaks of Industry Fare Pressures
Image Source: Colin Brown. Delta Air Lines reported disappointing second-quarter results on July 11 with both revenue and non-GAAP earnings per share coming in lower than expected. The company put up record June quarter revenue, which reached $15.4 billion on an adjusted operating basis, up 5.4% from the same period a year ago, but the Street was looking for more. Earnings per share of $2.36 also missed the consensus forecast. Though airlines have largely rationalized capacity in recent years, fare pressures are starting to weigh on performance. We maintain our view that airlines are not long-term investments given their leverage to a cyclical economy and volatile jet fuel prices. Apr 10, 2024
Delta Reports Strong March Quarter; Airline Stocks are Too Risky for Our Taste
Image Source: Colin Brown. Delta’s quarter ending in March was solid, and its full year outlook was encouraging. In general, however, we don’t like airline equities. The extreme ticket price transparency creates an ultra-competitive environment, and overcapacity is always a concern. We view airlines as merely trading vehicles on the health of the global economy and the trajectory of crude oil prices. Delta is operating well, but it will never be able to escape the challenges of its industry, and for those reasons we remain on the sidelines with respect to shares. Mar 10, 2024
Abercrombie & Fitch’s Mighty Comeback!
Image Source: Abercrombie & Fitch. Abercrombie & Fitch is experiencing a resurgence as the company reconnects with its target market, and the traction it has regained with its customers is quite something. The firm noted that it continues to experience strong momentum across its brand portfolio, and its long-term target is to achieve $5 billion in global sales (its sales were $4.3 billion in its most recent fiscal year). For 2024, it expects net sales to expand 4%-6%, and for its operating margin to be ~12%, up 60 basis points from the mark it reached last year. Abercrombie swung to being significantly free cash flow positive in its most recently completed fiscal year, and it ended the period with a net cash position. The company’s comeback has been nothing short of remarkable. Fickle fashion trends make the stock difficult to consider for long-term investors, however. Jan 8, 2024
Boeing In Negative Headlines Again; Part of 737 Max Fuselage Blows Out During Commercial Flight
Image: Boeing's shares have been quite volatile the past couple years. On January 6, Boeing received some more bad news. Part of a fuselage installed on one of its new eight-week old 737 Max 9 aircraft blew out on an Alaska Airlines flight. Boeing had been working hard to get back on track with customer perception of the safety of its 737 MAX line-up, and we view the incident as yet another hiccup in the firm’s relations with the public. First Gene-Editing Therapy Coming to Market; Reiterating Our Positive Stance on Vertex Pharma
Credit: Darryl Leja, NHGRI. On December 8, 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it had approved Vertex Pharma’s and CRISPR Therapeutics’ novel gene-editing therapy (“Casgevy” – exa-cel) for sickle cell disease [SCD] in patients that are 12 years of age or older. This is the first such approval of its kind in U.S. history and will likely open the door for more gene-editing therapies for other rare diseases in the future. Estimates indicate that roughly 16,000 people will be eligible for the treatment at an estimated cost of around $2.2 million each, according to Reuters. The one-time market size of roughly $35.2 billion is a needle-mover, but the pace and timing of adoption of the therapy among the eligible population is difficult to estimate at this time. Note also that the therapy is of one-time application, meaning the therapy is a functional cure and will not be a source of recurring revenue from each patient. Nevertheless, it is an exciting development for medical science. Nov 4, 2023
Booking Holdings Is a Net-Cash-Rich, Free-Cash-Flow Generating Powerhouse!
Image: Booking Holdings remains an asset-light, free-cash-flow generating powerhouse. Booking Holdings ended the September quarter with a modest net cash position. Cash and cash equivalents totaled ~$13.3 billion and short-term investments came in at $624 million, a sum that was greater than its short-term debt load of ~$1.9 billion and long-term debt of ~$11.9 billion. The company hauled in ~$6 billion in cash flow from operations during the first nine months of 2023 and only spent $251 million on property and equipment, good for significant free cash flow generation. Its free cash flow margin so far in 2023, as measured by free cash flow divided by sales, was an impressive ~35%, showcasing just how efficient Booking Holdings is in converting its top line to cold hard cash. Our $3,164 per share fair value estimate remains unchanged at this time. Nov 3, 2023
People Love Their Starbucks
Image: Starbucks remains a strong free cash flow generator. Operational efficiencies, sales leverage and pricing strength helped drive Starbucks' GAAP operating income growth of 42.7% and non-GAAP earnings per share to $1.06 in the quarter, up 31% on a year-over-year basis. Starbucks ended its fourth quarter of fiscal 2023 with ~$3.95 billion in cash and short-term investments and short- and long-term debt of ~$15.4 billion, resulting in a net debt position on the books. Free cash flow generation remains robust at Starbucks, however, with the measure coming in at ~$3.7 billion for the fiscal year ending October 1, 2023. We’re reiterating the high end of our fair value estimate range of $120 for Starbucks’ shares. Aug 4, 2023
Best Idea Booking Holdings Soars!
Image: Booking Holdings’ free cash flow conversion is about as good as it gets. The company remains a key idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Image Source: Booking Holdings. Booking Holdings fits the mold of the type of companies that we’re looking for in this market environment. The company has an asset-light business model that is tied to secular growth trends, all the while it boasts a net cash position and significant free cash flow generation. The company’s outlook also speaks to continued strength as it relates to leisure demand, a key data point suggesting that the broad economic environment remains resilient despite rate increases and the erosion of excess consumer cash savings built up during the COVID-19 pandemic. The quarterly report was welcome news. Jan 10, 2023
Dow Laggard Walgreens Boots Alliance Yields North of 5%; Has Raised Dividend for 47 Consecutive Years
Image: Walgreens Boots Alliance’s shares have been pummeled during 2022. Image Source: TradingView. Key metrics, including free cash flow and adjusted earnings per share, aren’t presently moving in the right direction at Walgreens Boots Alliance, but free cash flow generation remains in excess of cash dividends paid. The company, and its predecessor firm, Walgreen Co., have paid 360 straight quarters of dividends over the past 90 years, too, raising the payout in each of the past 47 years. It’s absolutely amazing for a company to have such a storied history and reliable dividend track record, but it’s also worth emphasizing Walgreens Alliance Boots is far from a simple story these days. Still, with a 5%+ forward estimated dividend yield, this component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average is worth a close look. The High Yield Dividend Newsletter, Best Ideas

Image Source: TradingView. Delta’s restoration of its financial guidance is positive as it relates to financial visibility, particularly with respect to the impact tariffs may have on consumer spending for travel. As noted in its commentary, fiscal 2025 earnings per share is targeted in the range of $5.25-$6.25, with free cash flow of $3-$4 billion and gross leverage less than 2.5x. Management noted that “demand trends stabilized at levels that are flat to last year” through the quarter and that it “continued to see resilience in (its) diverse, high-margin revenue streams.” For the September quarter, Delta expects total revenue to be flat to up 4% compared to the prior year. Non-fuel unit costs are expected to be the best performance of the year in the September quarter. Delta also upped its quarterly dividend 25% beginning in the September quarter. We like Delta’s enhanced visibility in restoring its guidance, though we think there are better opportunities on the market than airlines. Shares yield 1.3% at the time of this writing.
