BHP Group Shakes Up Long-Term Strategy
Image Source: BHP Group Ltd – Full Fiscal Year 2020 IR Earnings Presentation. Though burdened by its net debt load, BHP Group has done a solid job navigating the storm created by COVID-19 so far. While production at several of its mines was negatively impacted during the first half of calendar year 2020 (second half of BHP Group’s fiscal 2020), BHP Group has implemented new procedures to ensure its employees can stay safe while mining operations resume in earnest. We appreciate management’s pivot away from some of BHP Group’s legacy assets. To read more about BHP Group, please check out our June 2020 article highlighting our thoughts on how the firm is capitalizing on the ongoing economic recovery in China.

Lockheed Martin Secures Major Aircraft Order
Image Shown: Lockheed Martin Corporation’s ‘Aeronautics’ segment is its largest in terms of operating profit. Management boosted the firm’s operating profit guidance for fiscal 2020 during Lockheed Martin’s latest earnings report. Image Source: Lockheed Martin Corporation – Second Quarter of Fiscal 2020 IR Earnings Presentation. On August 14, the US Department of Defense (‘DoD’) awarded Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) a ten-year $62.0 billion contract covering the sale of F-16 aircraft to overseas buyers. This is an “indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (‘IDIQ’), fixed-price-incentive contract” and it is possible the ultimate sales figure under this deal will be lower than $62.0 billion. In the press release announcing the contract, the DoD noted the initial delivery order covers 90 aircraft and that this portion of the deal was worth a bit over $4.9 billion. Most of the production work on the new jet fighters will be conducted in South Carolina and Texas.

Disney’s Video Streaming Strength Shines Through Latest Earnings
Image Shown: The Walt Disney Company recently reported earnings which highlighted the ongoing success of its video streaming strategy. Shares of DIS surged upwards on August 5, 2020. On August 4, The Walt Disney Company reported third quarter fiscal 2020 earnings (period ended June 27, 2020) that missed consensus top-line estimates but beat consensus bottom-line estimates. Shares of DIS were higher by ~11% on August 5 as of this writing, as investors looked past its weak historical performance (which was expected) and towards Disney’s improving outlook. We appreciated the announcement that Disney now has over 100 million paid subscriptions across its “portfolio of direct-to-consumer services” including Disney+, EPSN+, and Hulu (Disney owns 67% of Hulu’s equity). Disney’s business model has faced acute stresses due to the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic, making its video streaming growth strategy all the more important. We continue to like shares of DIS at a modest weighing in our Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio.

PayPal Posts a Tremendous Quarterly Report, Reinstates Guidance
Image Shown: PayPal Holdings Inc put up tremendous performance during the first half of 2020 as consumers are increasingly shopping online. In the second quarter of 2020, PayPal continued to grow at a decent clip even in the face of the ongoing pandemic. Image Source: PayPal Holdings Inc – Second Quarter of 2020 IR Earnings Presentation. After the market close July 29, PayPal reported second quarter 2020 earnings that beat consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. Shares of PYPL moved sharply higher after the report was published, and we continue to like PayPal as a holding in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Our fair value estimate sits at $200 per share of PYPL, comfortably above where PayPal is trading at as of this writing. There is room for meaningful capital appreciation upside as the top end of our fair value estimate range sits at $240 per share of PayPal. Even in the face of the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic PayPal continued to grow, and we appreciate the resilience of its business model. The firm’s cash flow profile is of high quality, supporting its ability to generate meaningful free cash flows in any economic environment. Additionally, having a pristine balance sheet provides PayPal with ample financial flexibility to ride out the storm.

Earnings Brief: SAM, MAT, TOT, HON, AXP
Image Source: Boston Beer. CEO Dave Burwick noted in Boston Beer’s second-quarter press release: “The growth of the Truly brand, led by Truly Hard Lemonade, has accelerated and continues to grow beyond our expectations. Since early January, Truly has grown its velocity and its market share sequentially while other national, regional and local hard seltzer brands have entered the category. Truly is the only hard seltzer, not introduced earlier this year, to grow its share during 2020.” We’re impressed, but still taking a cautious view on SAM’s shares.

Exxon Mobil Puts on a Brave Face
Image Source: Exxon Mobil Corporation – November 2019 Guyana IR Presentation. Near-term oil prices and most importantly, the oil price futures curve, have improved materially since just a couple of months ago when it looked like the sky was falling. For the first time ever, WTI turned negative in April 2020 for physical deliveries due May 2020 of light sweet oil to Cushing, Oklahoma, as storage options were limited (and arguably, many speculators had jumped into the market not fully aware of the risks they were taking on). Exxon Mobil Corp has seen its share price recover considerably since the drop, though we caution that management’s commitment to the dividend will prove a hard task if things do not improve materially in the short-term. As of this writing, near-term futures for WTI and its international counterpart Brent are trading near $40 per barrel. In the face of COVID-19, low raw energy resource prices (Exxon Mobil’s upstream operations form its largest single business segment), and subdued demand for refined petroleum and petrochemical products (from gasoline to plastics) have significantly weakened Exxon Mobil’s cash flow profile. The ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic has shaken energy markets to their core in ways we have not seen ever before. Shares of XOM yield ~7.4% as of this writing. We give Exxon Mobil a Dividend Cushion ratio at 0.2, though its Dividend Safety rating is “GOOD” given the company’s ability to tap capital markets, especially debt markets as the oil giant carries high quality “A-rated” investment grade credit ratings. There is a limit to how much debt Exxon Mobil can take on to cover its dividend obligations, however, which we will cover in greater detail in this article.
